Introduction to ArcGIS 9.x
Designed for new GIS users or those migrating to ArcGIS 9.x from ArcGIS 8.x, this workshop introduces participants to ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox, and ArcMap in the ArcGIS 9.x environment. Participants develop practical skills working with geographic data models, data availability and acquisition, map-making, applications of GIS in planning and county government, and discuss future trends in GIS development. Lab exercises are included in each session, allowing participants to further master skills and concepts.
Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst in ArcGIS 9.x
This workshop teaches participants the fundamental concepts of raster analysis (map algebra) and 3D visualization. Participants will learn the underlying concepts and gain experience on the Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions in ArcGIS 9.x through problem-solving lab exercises. This workshop is designed for users who want to learn more advanced spatial analysis in GIS.
Upon successful completion of a workshop, participants are eligible for 1.5 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits from Appalachian State University.

Facilities
Operational since 1998, the Spatial Outreach Laboratory (SOL) is a state of the art facility operated by the Department of Geography and Planning on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.
Workshop Faculty
Dr. Jeff Colby teaches courses in digital image processing and advanced GIS. He brings a wealth of GIS and image processing experience and maintains an active research agenda in hydrological modeling and correction of multi-spectral satellite imagery in mountainous terrain.
Dr. Chris Badurek teaches Introductory GIS and GIS for Social and Environmental Sciences courses. Chris has experience applying GIS to crime analysis, property and law enforcement data management, and social services planning. He is also engaged in research concerning GIS databases and regional economic development.
Art Rex has taught introductory and advanced GIS courses. In addition to supervising student research and service projects, Art also maintains a strong connection with county and state agencies using GIS.
