Dr. Soulé is looking for a graduate student assistant for the 2010 - 11 academic year to work on his National Science Foundation-funded dendroecology project dealing with climate / atmospheric changes and western trees. Dr. Saskia van de Gevel was awarded the Wachovia Award for Environmental Research. The Wachovia Award recognizes significant contributions to environmental research by Appalachian faculty and/or graduate students and fosters environmental research with particular application to the Southern Appalachian region. |

Dr. Baker Perry is currently involved with other Appalachian Faculty in a project called AppalAIR (Appalachian Atmospheric Interdisciplinary Research). The team is monitoring air quality and atmospheric conditions at the highest point of campus behind the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. The Bruce & Tom Shinn Native Plant Research Grant was awarded to our Graduate Student, Philip White, this grant is from the North Carolina Native Plant Society. Philip will submit an article to be published in Wildflower, The Journal of the N.C. Native Plant Society, upon completion of the project. |

Williams Thesis Award for 2008 in Science and Technology was awarded to our Geography Graduate Student, Lauren Hunter and her Committee Chair, Dr. Chris Badurek, for her thesis titled "Integrating GIS and Geosensors to Support Sustainable Agriculture in a North Carolina Mountain Vineyard" |
